Monitor System Resources

  • Manage CPU and memory
  • Disk utilization

  • Using RHN as well as custom repository install software and query with yum

Deploy Network Services

  • Deploy VNC, FTP, and web services
  • Require key authentication with SSH

Secure File Systems and Network Services

  • Restrict data access with ACLs
  • Secure web services with a firewall and SELinux

Manage Physical Storage

  • Manage encrypted partitions, filesystems, and swap space

Manage Logical Volumes

  • Understand Logical Volume concepts
  • Manage Logical Volumes, including snapshots

Control the Boot Process

  • Understand run levels
  • Control GRUB

Tune and Maintain the Kernel

  • Pass parameters to the kernel
  • Manage kernel modules

Automate Installation with Kickstart

  • Create kickstart configurations
  • Use them to install Linux

Manage Virtual Machines

  • Deploy and manage KVM virtual machines

Troubleshoot System Problems

  • Apply a systematic approach to diagnose and correct system failures

Research Linux Resources

  • Access Linux documentation and services


Delegates attending this course should have basic experience with following:

  • Bash shell including job control, shell expansion, protection, I/O redirection and pipes.
  • IPV4 network addresses, routing concepts and TCP/UDP and ports.
  • Navigation of GNOME 3 interface.
  • Edit text files from the command line with VIM or other present programs.
  • Finding information in main pages and info nodes.
  • The concept of permissions and an interactive installation of Linux.
  • Per user ‘at’ and ‘on’ jobs.
  • Able to use archival utilities such as ‘tar’, ‘zip’ and comp’ and compression utilities
  • Relative and absolute paths
  • Find files with ‘find' and ‘locate’.

Delegates should have 1-3 years of working experience with Linux administration.

  • Login to Linux system and using shell run simple commands
  • From bash shell quick work with files
  • Administer local password policies and manage Linux users and groups
  • Set access permissions on files and interpret security effects of different permission settings
  • To manage access to data and understand and troubleshoot SELinux security forces use SELinux
  • Control and monitor processes are running on the system
  • Download, install, manage and update software packages from yum package repositories and Linux
  • Using system control, monitor network services and system daemons
  • Primary IPV4 network configuration on Linux systems
  • Interpret and locate relevant system log files for troubleshooting purposes
  • Create disk partitions, logical volumes, file systems, and swap spaces
  • Schedule recurring system tasks using corn and systemd timer units
  • From network file servers mount network file system (NFS) exports and server message block (SMB) shares
  • Configure a basic local firewall
  • Install and Manage KVMs with Linux using Kickstart
