It is situated at the mouth of the River Wear, 10 miles of the south east of the city Newcastle upon Tyne and 240 miles away from the London. The city was incorporated as a municipal borough in 1835 and got the county borough and metropolitan borough status by Local Government Act in 1888 and 1972 respectively. The wear river passes through the middle of the city divides the city into two parts and are well connected by the two road bridges. The population of the city is located towards the west of the city centre.
There were a large number of Jewish people settled in the city in the 18th century but number started decreasing as this community shifted to other parts of the world in the mid of 20th century.
