Portsmouth is a naval port city of England located 73.5 miles from Central London with a population of 205,400. History of Portsmouth can be found back in the Roman times. During French and European invasions, the city served as country’s first line of defence in 1545, and Palmerston Forts were built in 1859 respectively. The city had an oldest dry dock and also known for its fortification in the world. It became a most industrialised city in the world by setting first mass production line in the city. The city was bombed extensively and served as a boarding point for the D-Day landings.
The city is also known for world famous Cathedrals Anglican and Roman Catholic. Some leading ships like the Tudor, HMS Warrior and the world’s oldest naval ship HMS victory are also based in the city. Commercial Cruise ship also uses the port of the city and hosts as a ferry port for the global terminal.
The city had its own international airport, but it was closed in 1973 due to the lesser area for further expansion. Now, space is being used for developing townships, commercial and industrial purpose. The city will also serve as a home port to two largest ships HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales and will help the Royal Navy in their development.
Landmarks
Some of the great reasons to explore the vibrant city are its beautiful waterfronts, great shopping centres, live music theatres, two cathedrals, historical museums and modern art galleries. The city hosted two prominent events (Victorious music festival and America’s Cup World Series) on Southsea Common recently. There are plenty of places to visit in the city such as D-Day museum, the Emirates Spinnaker Tower, Southsea Castle, HMS Victory, Royal Armouries, Portsdown Hill, the Pyramids Centre, Portsmouth Museum Blue Reef Aquarium and even more exciting locations.
