Newcastle or Newcastle upon Tyne is the largest city in North East England and the eighth most famous city of the United Kingdom in Urban area. It is situated on the North West banks the Tyne river. It is the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear and historic county of Northumberland. The city is also a member of Eurocities network and the English Core Cities Group. The city grew rapidly in the middle ages during the period of Industrial Revolution, and the city got its status in 1882. During the medieval period, the city was developed as trading and merchant centre and became the great provincial hub of England. Then royal favours, heavy engineering, charters and shipbuilding played a significant role in the growth and urbanisation of the city.
Newcastle is one of the first cities in the world in electric lighting. Electric trams were introduced in 1901 as a new Public transport system in the streets of the city then they got replaced by trolley buses in 1935. Transportation of the city was improved with the arrival of the motor cars. The city and its surrounding area were the primary targets of air attacks during the Second World War due to the massive production of ships and weapons in the city.
Education
Newcastle is filled with diverse opportunities in the fields of history, sociology, political science and philosophy. There are plenty of independent, state-run and Catholic schools in the city. There are two leading universities (Newcastle University and Northumbria University) in the city. Northumbria University won the award of Most IT-enabled organisation in the United Kingdom whereas Newcastle University is one of the leading international university in the country.
