Luton

Luton is the largest city of the England and located in the south of Bedfordshire, United Kingdom. The city derived its name from Celtic god Lugh and settlement of Lugh became the town, Luton.The city has two main league teams Luton Town Football Club and Football League Cup. The city was famous for manufacturing of commercial vehicles, production of cars and straw hats. During the 19th century, the city grew rapidly after the existence of railway connection. Leighton Buzzard, the Great Northern Railways and London & Birmingham Railway were built during that period. Existing Town hall employed the thousands of residents was demolished in 1919 at the end of the First World War. Then after new Town hall was constructed to provide the job opportunities and it was completed in the year 1936

The city was also on the target of air raids due to the production of Churchill tanks during the Second World War, and a large number of homes were damaged. Vauxhall car Production Company finally decided to close its plant in 2000 and site of the plant is purposed to be used for commercial, housing and entertainment use. The city also serves as host for largest one day Carnival festival in Europe.

The economy of the city was earlier focused on car production, hatters, millinery and engineering industry. Now, the focus is shifting to commercial and airport sector. Many Notable firms like Monarch Airlines, EasyJet, Thomson Airways, Vauxhall Motors and Impellam Group have their headquarters in this city.

Education

There are total 98 educational institutes in the city out of which 56 are primary, 13 secondary, seven nurseries and eight other educational institutes. The city’s two leading colleges Barnfield and Luton sixth form have been rewarded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families for excellent learning skills. The University of Bedfordshire has its main campus situated in the city centre of Luton.

There are several excellent locations in the city attracting the attention of the tourists are Luton Town Hall, Luton Hoo, Wardown Park Museum, Stockwood Discovery Centre, Whipsnade Zoo and Someries Castle.
