Kingston upon Hull also known as Hull, is a city located in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It lies upon the River Hull at its convergence with the Humber creek. The Hull has a population of 260,200. It has been nominated to be the 2017 UK City of Culture.
History
In the 12th Century when the monks of Meaux Abbey needed a port to export the wool from their estates they chose a place at the confluence of the rivers Hull and Humber to build a dock called Wyke on Hull. King Edward I renamed this town from Wyke on Hull to Kingston upon Hull in 1299. It was founded in the 12th Century but the exact date and year is unknown though it is said to have been first mentioned in 1193. Hull is known as a market town, a port for military supplies, trading hub, fishing and whaling center, and also an industrial metropolis.
Hull was an early place for many battles in the English Civil Wars. It also suffered heavy damages in the Second World War. Hull faced a period of post-industrial decline in the fields of education and policing and also saw a rise in society related problems. The 21st century saw Hull progressing with various businesses such as retail, commercial, housing and public service construction gaining momentum. This progress was briefly slowed down during the recession of 2008 when the whole world was facing a crisis.
Tourism
The historic Old Town and Museum Quarter, Hull Marina, and The Deep are some of the main tourist attractions and landmarks of the Hull. During the restoration of the Ferensway, one of Hull's main accesses, the St Stephen's Hull and the new Hull Truck Theatre were also opened.
Education
The University of Hull which was founded in 1927 has more than 16,000 enrolled with it and in the Yorkshire and the Humber regions it ranks as one of the best.
