Famous Buildings of Ipswich

There are some significant buildings such as the New Wolsey Theatre and the Regent Theatre with the latter being one of the largest theatres in East Anglia. The East Suffolk County Hall is situated in the centre of Ipswich, and the Town Hall is still in use as an arts and events centre.

The Endeavour House, Ipswich Crown Court and Grafton House are the modern buildings of the city and all of them being located on the Russell Road which is known as the Ipswich Village Development.

Culture

Ipswich is host to some artists as well as galleries. There are other supported visual arts with various sculptures at easily accessible sites also in the city. Ipswich Transport Museum, Ipswich Museum and Christchurch Mansion are the three museums in the town.

Transportation Facilities

A12 and A14 are the roads which are very close to the town; it is situated on the Great Eastern main line which is from London to Norwich, Felixstowe branch line, the East Suffolk Line to Lowestoft. The town has two central railway station which is Ipswich Railway Station and Derby Road Railway Station. Ipswich engine shed was engine shed which was opened in 1846 and closed in 1968.

First Norfolk & Suffolk and Ipswich are the bus services which serve the city. Old Cattle Market bus station operates for all regional and long-distance bus services. Rural buses and minibus services are serves to surrounding villages. Though some are very infrequent.

Sports

Ipswich Town is the only professional football club in Ipswich and was established in 1878. As of 2015, the club competes in the Football League Championship at the Portman Road Stadium which has a seating capacity of 30,300. Ipswich Wanderers, Ransomes Sports, Crane Sports and Whitton United are the non-league football club in the city.

Education

Copleston and Northgate High Schools are the comprehensive schools. The town has academies such as Ipswich Academy and Chantry Academy. Ipswich has several independent schools such as Ipswich School, Royal Hospital School, St. Joseph College and Ipswich High School.

Suffolk New College is a college for further studies and is located in Ipswich. The city also has a Sixth Form College which is situated in the city centre. The University of Suffolk is the first Higher Education Institution which was founded in 2007. The University got its university status in May 2016 and Degree Awarding Powers in November 2015.

  • Sarah Trimmer was born in Ipswich in 1741, and she was a writer and also critic of children’s literature.
  • Richard Ayoade is a British actor and born in Ipswich. He performed in “The IT Crowd” as Maurice Moss Blanche Georgiana Vulliamy was an English ceramic, painter and writer and belongs to the city.
