Inverness also known as the capital of the Highlands is a fastest growing city in the Scottish Highland. It is located near two important battle sites of the Culloden Moor and The Aird. With a population of around 46,870 in 2012, it is the northernmost city in the United Kingdom and includes the areas of Westhill, Balloch, Smithton and Culloden. It is situated on the east bank of the river Ness, also known as Mouth of the River Ness and surrounded by three road bridges and one-foot bridge on the west side.
Currently, the city is also voted fifth for its high quality of life among 189 cities and has second largest economic growth of the Great Britain with the introduction of hi-tech industries in the city. It is considered as the happiest place to live in the Scotland and United Kingdom by a recent survey conducted in 2015. Raigmore is the main hospital cum medical college in the city was opened in 1970 provides best medical education to the students and personalized care and guidance to the patients at an affordable cost. A new centre for Health Science adjacent to Raigmore Hospital is also opened in the city attracting more medical business in the area.
Education
There are plenty of primary and secondary schools in the city providing world class educational services to the students. For higher education, the University of the Highlands and Islands has its main campus in the city with strength around 8500 students. The new academic campus is situated in the area of 200 acres consists business and incubation units, residential units, academic buildings and sports complex. It is considered as most important development towards the economy of the city.
Travel and Tourism
It forms an important part of the economy. The city has an excellent touring base with strong rail, road and air connections. The city is well known for its old stone buildings, Botanic Gardens, excellent Museum and art galleries, Bars and Pubs, vibrant shopping centres, ancient castles and clans, entertainment and live music and old burial cairns. Scottish Natural Heritage is the major employer offering a large number of jobs in the city.
