Crewe with a population of 72,863, is a railway town and civil parish (located around 158 miles north of London) within the borough of Cheshire East and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England. It is best known as a large railway junction and is home to Crewe Works which had been for many years a major railway engineering facility for manufacturing and revamping locomotives, but now has been reduced a lot in size. From 1946 until 2002 it was also the home of Rolls-Royce motor car production. The Pyms Lane factory on the west of the town now produces Bentley motor cars exclusively.
Government
Crewe is within the United Kingdom Parliamentary constituency of Crewe and Nantwich as also within the ceremonial county of Cheshire. Crewe is locally administered by Cheshire East Council.
Media
The known newspapers circulating the Crewe town are - the weekly Crewe Chronicle, the Crewe and Nantwich Guardian and the daily Sentinel. As far as the local radio stations are concerned the Silk 106.9 from Macclesfield, Signal 1 and Signal 2 from Stoke-on-Trent and BBC Radio Stoke serve the Crewe population. The Nantwich-based RedShift Radio, a community internet radio station, covers Crewe, Nantwich and South Cheshire. The Cat is a FM that broadcasts to Crewe, Nantwich and surrounding areas on 107.9FM and online. It is the first and only dedicated FM radio station for Crewe and Nantwich.
Sport
Crewe Alexandra, Crewe’s local football club, enjoyed during the late 20th century something of a rebirth under the management of Dario Gradi. It played in the First Division – the second tier of the professional pyramid – for five seasons from 1997 to 2002. As of now the club plays in League Two (the fourth tier) after having been relegated from League One in the 2015/16 season. However, the club had also won in 2013 its first-ever major silverware after beating Southend United 2-0 in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final at Wembley.
