The Corby is a town and borough located 23 miles north east of the Northampton with a population of around 61,300 in 2011 census. The borough of the Corby includes towns and villages of Rockingham, Cottingham, Weldon, Middleton, Stanion, Gretton and Little Stanion. The city has a fastest growing population in the Northamptonshire and United Kingdom. A large number of Scottish migrants were also settled in the city for its steel works and also known as Little Scotland. The history of the city can be found in the settlement of Danish invaders in the eighth century. The city was granted a charter and right to hold market and two annual fairs in the 15th century which exempted local landowners from paying dues and tolls.
The city was a small village in 1931 with a population of around 1500 and later on, became an industrial town with the establishment of ironstone industry and steelworks. The city was the primary target for the German bombers during the Second World War. Fortunately, there were no casualties recorded as the whole area was covered artificially by dense black and low lying clouds to hide steelworks furnaces from bomber crews. The population of the city increased to 18,000 and it was designated a New Town in 1950. The Enterprise Zone was established in the city in 1991 to combat the unemployment issues. The wealth of the city flourished due to its strategic central location and supported by substantial grants from the EU. The city had largest Rangers Supporters club but closed in February 2013.
Redevelopment
The city has an Urban Regeneration Company covers the development of whole north of Northamptonshire. Recently, many regenerations and business development projects are coming up in the city and population is expected to double in next 30 years. New shopping precinct was opened in the city in 2007 to cater the increasing needs of residents.
