Chichester

Chichester is a cathedral city and the lone city in West Sussex, in South-East England.Its history dates back to the Roman times though it was also well known in Anglo-Saxon period as well. Home toa 12^th Century Cathedral, it is the seat of the Church of England Diocese of Chichester. Some of the oldest churches and buildings in Great Britain are located in Chichester.

Buildings

The Butter Market, designed by John Nash is located in the North Street. It opened in 1808 as a food and produce market. In 1900, a second storey was added to the building which initially was home to an arts institute. The building has been recently renovated.
The Corn Exchange in East Street was built in 1833. At its time it was the first of its kind in the whole country. The building with its imposing structure is said to have been designed for the sole purpose of showing off its importance to the trade world. It started to host dramas and other entertainment related shows in 1833.Beginning 1923 it was used as a a restaurant till 1984. Currently it is home to the Next clothing retailers.
The Chichester Cross, built in the beginning of the 16^th century (1501 A.D precisely) is a type of Buttercross familiar to old market towns. It came up as a covered market-place, and stands at the intersection of the four main roads in the centre of the city.

Transport

Chichester is the hub of several main roads with A27 being the most important one. The A27 links Chichester to the M27, M3 and M275 motorways. Chichester railway station which lies on the West Coastway Line, provides its services to Brighton, London Victoria via Gatwick Airport, Portsmouth and Southampton. There are also many bus services, with Chichester bus station, adjacent to the railway station, acting as a local hub.
