Chatham is located in North Kent. Many army barracks were located in Chatham to provide a defensive shield for the dockyard.
The population of Chatham was more than 16,000 in 1831 whereas it becomes 48,800 in 1961. Chatham is known as the Centre of first Baptist chapel in north Kent and the Zion Baptist Chapel in Clover Street. Chatham’s hockey club, Holcombe is one of the largest clubs in the country. Chatham is the principal shopping Centre and headquarters of Medway unitary authority. Chatham is well-renowned by the name of the home of the first Baptist chapel in North Kent. The Chatham town hall, Grade II listed building is a unique architectural designed building which stands in the brook and was built in 1900. Although Chatham dockyard closed in 1984, yet there were remains of major naval buildings as the attraction for a flourishing tourist industry. The term ‘Chav’ is derived from the Romany word, which is used for ‘youngsters’.
Chatham became an arts Centre in 1996. The old bus station of the city, which was built in 1970, had an unpleasant environment for the passengers and this bus station was replaced by the new Waterfront bus station in 2011. Chatham railway station serves the North Kent and the Chatham Main Lines. This station was opened in 1858 and is the interchange between the two lines. Unitarian Chapel of this city was built in 1861.
Chatham is famous as the Zion Baptist Chapel in Clover Street. Chatham is the main Centre of several movements in literature, art and music on a cultural level. Chatham parish church was rebuilt in 1788 and it stood on Dock Road. Gillingham F.C. football league represents the Medway.
